The hot water zone underlying Rotorua City is fed, at least in part, from the Whakarewarewa geothermal system just to the south of the city. There is a growing public view that use of the water and energy from the hot water system could be in conflict with the need to maintain pressures and flows in the Whakarewarewa system to keep the surface activity, so important for it as a tourist asset, at its peak
