Non-electric utilization of a portion of the geothermal fluid from production wells is described at four of the six geothermal power stations in Japan: Ohnuma, Matsukawa, Ohtake and Hatchobaru. There is no non-electric utilization at the remaining two, Kakkonda and Onikobe areas. In general, the geothermal fluid flows through a heat exchanger in which it heats fresh water from a nearby river. The heated fresh water, in turn, is used for a variety of purposes in the environs of these stations. A major use is in bathing which is a reflection of the bathing-loving trait of the Japanese. District heating and greenhouse heating are, of course, also found in some of these areas
