The rugged mountains and rolling plains of Montana hide beneath them an enormous geothermal resource. Surface evidence of this energy is abundant in the numerous hot springs in western Montana, but a potentially far more important geothermal resource lies trapped in the deep limestone aquifers in the eastern third of the state. The geology and, historical uses of geothermal energy in Montana, as well as the current and planned applications of this resource, are summarized
