The volcanic energy from Mt Hood may prove to be an ideal source of heat for Portland's homes and industries from both the environmental and economic standpoints. The geological conditions in the vicinity of Mt Hood appear favorable for a large reservoir of hot water which could supply Portland's needs for centuries to come. The transport and distribution of hot water in insulated pipe lines is a well established technology. The development of a municipal district heating system would be expensive and disruptive, but once established, it would be cheap to operate and maintain. Geo-heat would be safe, dependable, and environmentally clean. In view of the rapidly rising costs, and the predicted shortages of oil and gas, it is the thesis of this paper that the possibility of geo-heat for Portland and other western cities should be investigated
