There are ice thermal energy storage (ITES) installations around the world with proven ability to shift demand and increase energy efficiency. Cooling is needed less in a moderate climate such as the Portland, Oregon, area which reduces potential benefits. Local utility companies and customers have limited ITES installations around Portland to draw estimations from. This project was designed to add to the study of potential ITES benefits for this area. A local client with high cooling needs was chosen and their chiller plant modelled using TRACE 700 software with historical load data, local weather, and current utility rate structures. Scenarios added ITES and associated incentives designed to study different sized installations and dispatch strategies. Some scenarios also modified the rate structure for possible future utility changes.
