The 1973-74 energy crisis has caused many hospital administrators and board's of trustees alarm in viewing growing utility costs amid declining supplies of critical fuel. Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital (P.I.H.) a 150-bed acute, general community owned hospital located in Klamath Falls, OR, was such an affected hospital. Klamath Falls is a community of approximately 38,000 situated about 15 miles north of the Northern California border on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountain Range. Its 4,100-foot elevation gives a climate range of temperature extremes of from -250 to 105°F with an average of 11 inches of rainfall and about 14 inches of snowfall each year
