Renewable energy may meet nearly 20% of U.S. needs by 2000, a doubling of its current contribution, a new report predicts. Renewable energy sources, which include hydropower biomass, geothermal, wind and direct solar technologies, in 1988 accounted for 6.1 quads of energy, roughly 9% of the 69 quads consumed in the country that year. The report estimates that by the year 2000, renewables will provide U.S. consumers with 14 quads, representing 15% to 19% of the country's projected energy consumption
