The developers of Shadow Hill, a new apartment complex in Klamath Falls, were pleased this past summer with the discovery of geothermal hot water on their property. This was somewhat of a risky venture for the owners, Mel Stewart and Brandsness Enterprises, Inc., since the area was outside the normal geothermal well area in the town. An eight-inch diameter exploratory well was drilled first to a depth of 1535 feet. Hot water was not encountered until the last 35 feet, as most of the drilling was through the local "chalk rock" (diatomaceous earth and tuff) and shales. The well was widened to 12 inches in diameter and cased with eight-inch casing to a depth of 1065 feet. A pump test was then performed, yielding water at over 166°F at 480 gpm.
