Coal combustion residual (CCR) is a byproduct of the coal-burning process at thermal power plants. This derivative is typically mixed with water for feasibility of transport and is subsequently deposited as a wet slurry into CCR impoundments. Mostly saturated and stored loosely, this metastable mixture has a predisposition to liquefaction under cyclic loadings. Failures of CCR impoundment facilities spurred United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulations in 2015. This mandate has sparked investigations into not only understanding CCR’s engineering characteristics but also its performance under cyclic loadings from construction equipment and earthquakes. In this project, CCR samples from a site in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States has been subjected to various index and performance tests to evaluate its potential to liquefy, specifically following cyclic loading conditions
