In the early 1970s, the research and development of geothermal energy in China was started on a large scale. Since then, more work has been accomplished, such as hot springs investigations, heat flow measurements, geothermal field explorations, etc. In the light of its geological structure, the high temperature geothermal resources are centered mainly in southern Tibet, western Yunnan and eastern Taiwan. There are over 100 high temperature geothermal reservoirs in those areas. The high temperature geothermal fields which are being exploited are: Yangbajing, Naqu, and Yangyinxiang geothermal fields in Tibet; Rehai and Radian geothermal fields in Yunnan; Tuchen, Qingshui, Datun, and Lushan geothermal fields in Taiwan. The low-moderate temperature geothermal resources occur mainly beneath the deep fault basins and subsidence basins throughout China. There are 37 such basins in China, each with an area of over 10,000 km2 , such as North China Basin, Songliao Basin, etc. In addition, 11 geothermal resources distributed along the eastern coast are characterized by shallow, good quality and low temperature resources.
