This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop on heat and mass transport in porous media held at Case Western Reserve University on 14-15 October 1974. The workshop is particularly timely with the renewed interest in understanding transport phenomena in porous materials for such applications as: the recovery of geothermal energy, the storage of solar energy, the improvement of thermal oil recovery methods, and the gasification of coal. These are but a few of the areas where an understanding of porous media transport is important. Although research work has been done in these areas,much of it has been devoted to particular applications. Consequently there are problem areas where little work has been done and fundamental understanding is still lacking. In addition the various jargons of each field have hindered the exchange of ideas. The workshop was convened to encourage more cross-fertilization of ideas and to give direction to areas of future research. Its purpose was to put into perspective some of the key problem areas dealing with heat and mass transport in porous media and to recommend areas of research that might prove to be most fruitful in the future
