Hawaii has the potential to achieve 100% electrical energy self-sufficiency, as well as some degree of liquid fuel self-sufficiency, by 1990. The benefits of this goal are many, and include the following: • A secure reliable source of indigenous energy, free from embargos and other foreign actions • Eventual freedom from OPEC price increases • Creation of jobs • Greater economic development • Stronger State tax base • Dramatic savings of dollars that now flow out of the State to pay -for imported petroleum that is used not only to generate electricity but for most Hawaiian energy requirements
