Mexico, at present, has the third largest geothermal power generating capacity in the world, primarily located at Cerro Prieto and Los Azufres. A total of 630 MWe are installed at Cerro Prieto of which 200 MWe is supplied to the United States, and 55 MWe is installed at Los Azufres. The exploration and utilization of geothermal resources has over a thirty-year history in Mexico, with the first geothermal plant installed in the Pathe field of Hidalgo State in 1959. At present, there are more than 130 known geothermal fields distributed throughout the country; however, direct utilization of geothermal energy is minimal
