Stohr-Gillmore for the degree of Master of Urban Planning in the Department of Planning, Public Policy and Management to be taken June 198 3 Title: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT APPRAISAL OF CRATER LAKE, OREGON Approved: John H. Baldwin Crater Lake National Park is located on the crest of the Cascade Mountain Range in southwestern Oregon. The "crater" is a caldera which was formed about 6,600 years ago when the top of a 12,000-foot volcano (Mount Mazama) collapsed. Crater Lake is "unique" among American lakes because of its clarity. Recent studies (1967-1981) indicate that there is an approximate 25% reduction in clarity. Human activities may directly or indirectly be affecting the lake's environment. Directly, it may occur from boat usage, sewage deposition, and/or the exotic fish population. Indirectly, it may be occurring from atmospheric deposition (acid rains, smoke and particulate matter, etc.). This Environmental Management Appraisal provides the Resources Management Division (Crater Lake National iii Park) with an inventory list of natural and human-induced resources located within the caldera. This Environmental Management Appraisal also provides recommendations that will aid in the management of the clarity problem.
