SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES The Cooperative Park Studies Unit (CPSU) is located in the School of Forestry, Department of Resource Recreation Management, with laboratory and supplementary office space provided by the Forestry Sciences Laboratory of the U.S. Forest Service. The Program Leader, Edward E. Starkey, has graduate faculty appointments in the Departments of Fisheries and Wildlife, and Resource Recreation Management. He teaches one or two courses each year in these departments. His primary responsibilities are to facilitate and conduct research on National Park Service resource management problems. Douglas Houston, a research biologist from Yellowstone National Park, spent most of CY 1980 at the CPSU while completing a monograph on the northern Yellowstone elk. This report examines the dynamics and history of the elk population and the effects of elk on the vegetation of the park. Funds to support the project were provided by the Rocky Mountain Region of the National Park Service, and Yellowstone National Park. The U.S. Forest Service provided office space at the Forestry Sciences Laboratory. The CPSU has provided administrative and clerical support, as well as liason with the scientific community at Oregon State University. Jean Matthews joined the CPSU staff during CY 1980. She is a Senior Science Writer for the NPS and occupies office space provided by the U.S. Forest Service, Forestry Sciences Laboratory. Her responsibilities include editing Pacific Park Science, a quarterly news letter for NPS managers and scientists, providing editorial assistance to scientists, and facilitating the communication of research results to managers and the public. Research supported by the CPSU continues to be diverse, both with regard to topic and location. Projects were conducted in six different NPS areas, and dealt with topics ranging from remote sensing to bear management. Research support totalled approximately $65,000 during CY 1980.
