ABSTRACT There is widespread agreement that people are affected by their environments, but little knowledge of how specific environmental elements affect behavior. A theory is developed which describes the connection between structure, perception, behavior, and experience. The theory is illustrated using an exploratory study of visitor behavior at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Rim Village, the center of visitor activity, was divided into areas depending on structural characteristics. Behavior was then observed and recorded to see how design and structure affected use patterns. Findings generally confirm the notion that design and structure affect behavior.
