In Southern Oregon, wheel path rutting is one of the most common forms of pavement distress. Asphalt pavement needs to be designed to resist rutting under normal traffic. Testing pavement mixtures before placing is vital in developing asphalt pavements that will remain in service for their full design life. The two main testing procedures used are AASHTO T 324-14 and T 340-10 also called the Hamburg-Wheel Track test and Asphalt Pavement Analyzer respectively. While these tests exist, rutting remains a complex issue with many factors affecting an asphalt’s performance. While AASHTO rutting tests have been implemented by some of the U.S. states, there is still a wide variation in procedures used and differing pass/fail criteria.
