Stimulus fading was utilized as a means of accomplishing desensitization to a subset of materials typically present in a routine dental exam. The present study examined the efficacy of stimulus fading of these materials on cooperation with dental exam procedures in one individual with autism. Results indicated that stimulus fading was effective, and cooperation was achieved with the bib clip and flosser. Potential confounds which may have influenced results and directions for future research are elaborated upon in the discussion.
