This project consists of a step-step preliminary design of an elastomeric base isolation system for a theoretical 100’x100’ four-story data center located in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Three bay sizes are investigated (12’-6”, 16’-8”, and 20’-0”) to determine which spacing uses the least amount of volume of rubber for an isolator. A response spectrum analysis is used to determine the natural period of the structure, and the ASCE 7-16 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures provides the guidance for determining the maximum displacement of the isolation system. The bay spacing which uses the least amount of volume of rubber is the 16’-8” bay spacing with a total volume of 130.3 ft3 for forty-nine 25.5” diameter lead-rubber isolators.
