Bicycle theft is a big problem in many cities, and as a result, the market has
responded with many different solutions ranging from cables, to U-Locks, and even
some vibration sensor based alarm systems. All of these various styles of security
systems have their flaws. Cables and U-Locks can’t secure the entire bicycle and only
stop opportunist thieves. Determined thieves can go to a hardware store and purchase
a pair of bolt cutters and steal all the bikes they want. The vibration sensor based
alarms are a step up but are incredibly easy to falsely trigger. In this paper, we will
propose a new type of bicycle alarm system that is highly effective, high tech, difficult to
trigger erroneously. The type of system we propose to build will not only stop
opportunists, but the more determined thieves as well.
