Reitmeier Mechanical is a commercial HVAC contractor that prides itself on energy efficient mechanical systems. The purpose of this project was to research and determine the feasibility of installing a grid-tied photovoltaic system on the roof of the Reitmeier Mechanical building. The system was designed as a grid-tied array that maximizes solar resources while ensuring the best return on investment. Many factors were considered in order to determine whether the project would be a smart economical choice for Reitmeier Mechanical. Contained in the report is a solar site assessment, calculations showing theoretical and expected outputs, determination of array layout, roof structural considerations, and a cost-benefit analysis. Design determinations were made by combining advice and input from various resources, selecting photovoltaic components, and calculating theoretical outputs. In determining what photovoltaic components to use, a descision was made to select components from local industries. For purposes of this report, calculations were made using Solarworld photovoltaic panels and PV-Powered inverters. The report concludes that that through government tax credits and incentives from Portland General Electric, a system could be installed that would meet 62% of their energy needs. The array has a design life of 25 years and a conservative payback period of 13.66 years was calculated for a return on investment. The benefits of installing the system also extend to helping project the company's "green" image, while meeting their desires for energy efficiency.
