Flow deposition and sol- gel were used to deposit orthosilicate (SiO4) into a porous silicon structure for the development of a lithium silicate cathode for a lithium ion battery with chemistry Li2SiO4. Using porous silicon substrates provides several benefits due to their high surface area, resulting in high energy density, and low cost due to silicon abundance. Inserting SiO4 into a porous structure can have advantages over other silicon cathode architectures including increased lithium-ion transport and decreased volumetric expansion.
