Blood Pressure is one of the most important vital signs. A blood pressure reading can provide to a physician or healthcare professional key information of the status of a patient. The following project reports the design, development, and implementation of a non-invasive blood pressure monitor. This blood pressure monitor utilizes the auscultatory method to detect blood pressure. A microcontroller board will be responsible for making the hardware and software to operate this device. An air pump will be responsible to increase the pressure in the cuff to a level above of the arterial blood pressure. The microcontroller board and the designed software will control a solenoid that will allow the cuff to be deflated at a specific rate. Utilizing a pressure transducer and a specialized Korotkoff sound detection circuit, this blood pressure monitor is able to provide an accurate reading of the arterial blood pressure. The arterial blood pressure reading will be shown on a LCD or a 7 segment LED display. As an additional feature this blood pressure monitor will read and detect heart rate. Because of the importance of obtaining an accurate blood pressure reading, this project will address the design and implementation of a blood pressure monitor.
