MAMBO: Machine Air-line Mobile Boom Organizer - Our team designed and built two articulating boom arms for the Canyon Creek machine shop at the Portland Metro campus. Richard Ellis, the shop technician, asked for an overhead boom for cable management. We worked to fulfill Richard's requests and preferences, creating high capacity boom arms, one supporting 200 lbs and the other supporting 50 lbs. The arms each rotate nearly 180 degrees, allowing for easy positioning when needed. This resolves the issue of cables and hoses being run on the floor, a safety hazard and OSHA violation. The arms are mounted on two different types of walls. One has wooden studs, and the other has steel studs. For this reason, two different mounting methods were developed. The shop technician is satisfied with the function of the boom arms and already uses them regularly while working in the shop.
