This thesis explores the effects on the current flow into and out of a lithium ion cell using 1-30 GHz RF internal to a cell as a means of reducing the intercalation resistance. Impedance spectroscopy is used to analyze the cell impedance when the active material is subject to a high frequency electromagnetic field while utilizing a cell architecture that separates the high frequency AC wave form from the DC current collectors. Results indicate that while the resistance to DC current flow may yet be reduced by this method, the practical applications in a commercial cell are limited due to the electromagnetic cavity dimensional requirements dictated by the wavelength of the RF signal.
