Soulrend is a third-person, open-world style action adventure game created using Unreal Engine 5. Featuring hack-and-slash combat mechanics similar to Souls-like games. The player controls Echo, a humanoid character equipped with dynamic cloth physics, and the ability to dodge, attack, jump, and equip different types of weapons. The game environment is built from scratch using Unreal's landscaping tools including assets and texture megascans from Quixel Bridge. The gameplay centers around combat, exploration, and character progression. Enemies range from humanoid knights to monstrous creatures and are designed with AI behaviors such as patrolling, chasing, and attacking. Utilizing UE5's Motion Warping technology, the enemies have precise animation targeting. Players can destroy breakable objects to gain loot and experience through soul collection. The visual effects in the game are created using the Niagara system and the audio effects are made via MetaSounds. Core gameplay features are implemented using C++, focusing on performance, reusability, and clean architecture with Unreal Engine's component-based design.
