There are millions of vehicles on the road today that were built before 2018, the year where automakers agreed to install backup cameras in nearly all vehicles as a standard. These older vehicles also lack many other Advanced Drivers Assistance Systems (ADAS) features. ADAS prevents accidents and can save lives: Forward collision warning systems alone may reduce rear-end crashes by 27% Blind Spot Detection is shown to reduce crashes by 14% Current aftermarket vehicle safety equipment offers piecemeal solutions that consist of a separate camera kit and proximity sensor kit. Effective aftermarket solutions are also expensive, up to $2,000 for a combined camera and radar system. The goal of this project is to design a low-cost sensor module that contains both a video camera and proximity sensor so that older vehicles can be retrofitted with comprehensive forward, rear, and blind spot detection systems.
