Microscopic life is all around us, but where exactly can we expect these tiny organisms to be thriving? In my research project I hoped to align how the stratification of microscopic organisms in a local pond relates to their abundance. I sampled water from a pond behind Oregon Tech's Portland-Metro campus and varying depths and then counted the amount of microscopic organisms I found in each depth. Surprisingly, there was a large difference in the abundance of these microscopic organisms from the surface of the water to the lowest depths!
